Portlandís Sacramento Elementary Recognized
with Technology Leadership Award
ST. LOUIS, Mo., June 9, 2008 -- Sacramento Elementary of the Parkrose School District in Portland, Oregon has been named to receive the Leader in Instructional Technology Award presented by Siboney Learning Group, publisher of Orchard Software. The award presentation will take place at Sacramento on Tuesday, June 10.
The Orchard Leader in Instructional Technology Award program recognizes schools and educators, such as Sacramento and its principal Stevie Blakely, across the United States who have embraced technology as a tool for delivering instruction, used it to its fullest potential, and experienced results. Criteria for nomination include successful use of educational technology; commitment of school staff to its use; and educators' passion for their students' success.
With a high poverty rate and large ELL population, Sacramento faces enormous challenges but is successful because it provides a strong foundation for its students. Blakely’s staff has used instructional technology to develop research-based, targeted interventions for struggling and advanced students. All students’ progress is monitored throughout the year and those students that perform below average are assessed more frequently and provided additional assistance in the form of targeted instruction. Sacramento’s motto is “Success for Every Student” and the staff’s belief is that all students can and will learn.
"We began using Orchard Software four years ago [for assessment, instruction, and progress monitoring],” said Blakely. "Since then we have received two exceptional school ratings from the State of Oregon and the National Title I Distinguished School from Oregon for the 2008 school year.”
Sacramento Elementary is a K-5 school of 420 students. Sixteen different languages are represented among the student body.
Each honoree in the Orchard program is eligible to be selected as the winner of Orchard's annual Leader in Instructional Technology Award. The school recognized for excellence with this annual award will receive a prize package that includes an interactive whiteboard and Orchard Software.
